Beauty! Thanks for pulling back the curtain and telling us about the process. I find discovering how other people write more interesting than the usual kinds of stories we see here.

Thanks, Paul. An addenda, as I left out a few things. 1) How reading others' takes on a topic can add nuance and other subtleties to your points, 2) Incorporate pace and even rhythm to your prose by varying the lengths and types of sentences, This creates "space" and breathing room for the reader. 3) Precision (diction) in word choices. As my friend Samuel Langhorne Clemens said, "Use the 'right' word, not its second cousin."

Appreciate this post Jim. I'm an avid reader, but haven't pulled the trigger on any meaningful writing in years. Your points about strengthening mental acuity and giving concreteness to thoughts really resonated. It may be just the spur I need. Thanks.

Thanks, Mick. Writing really does strengthen the mental muscle. I know "embrace the process" seems like an abstraction, but if you challenge yourself to make it good, then better, then the best, it will yield its own reward. The magic is in the work.

Now, I have no idea of how the neurocognition works between the mind and the fingers. But I vouch for Twain when he said "choose the right word, not its second cousin." Cheers -- Jim
