A term popped into my head over the weekend that I'm not sure has been used before: "homeless hipster." So that might be something buried in my own "luxury beliefs"? Probably.

Good points. I agree with all of them. "Big Momma Undies"? I'd hate to see your google search history, Jim...LOL

Jim,

You eviscerate Smash the Patriarchy with eloquent power.

Thank you for every fiery word.

The feminist anti-male propaganda peddled by the APA:

"According to the American Psychological Association …

The main thrust of the (…) research is that traditional masculinity β€”marked by stoicism, competitiveness, provision and aggression β€” is, on the whole, harmful.

β€” APA Guidelines for Practice with Boys and Men (2019) 4 "

is what is harming our men (and women)

not traditional masculinity.

As for patriarchy, while the term is heavily abused these days, it is in fact a real thing with a dark history and legacy all the same. It is neither natural nor timeless. It has a beginning, and it has an end. The War on Women began about 7000 years ago. We just call it "patriarchy" to make it sound nicer. (Bonus points for anyone who notices that all of those historically rigid restrictions on (mostly women's) sexuality, were designed by men primarily to control women, by the way.)

As for masculinity, it can be either toxic or tonic depending on a variety of factors.

For drugs, particularly the most dangerous ones, that is of course a very thorny issue. Though one could argue that the War on (people who use a few particular) Drugs is itself the ultimate luxury belief, and rife with rank hypocrisy.

I agree that "trickle-down economics" (or as I like to call it, "Reverse Robin Hood Economics") and "defund the police" (along with its corollary, "catch and release'") are indeed textbook examples of luxury beliefs. The others you mention, wouldn't really qualify as luxury beliefs IMHO. Though I would add that both Net Zero and Just Stop Oil would easily qualify, as did Covid lockdown zealotry.
