Well done, Jim - and I agree with the sentiments of the other commenters here, maybe with one caveat: AI will not likely be the potential monster it is currently being described as, IMHO. It’ll be tamed, for purely economic reasons if nothing else - if it becomes as frequently utter bullshit as we see with the Google AI Gemini rollout (likely unrecoverable I think), the pendulum will swing back, Tucker Carlson and Elon Musk will own the space and life will go on.

Thanks, Michael. I only gave AI one mention in this piece -- regarding Sports Illustrated's purported use. I've only seen Gemini's reviews in bits and pieces ... not enough to formulate a solid opinion.

I experimented with one of the OpenAI apps last year. It generated clean, coherent, error-free copy ... but ... it was shallow and completely void of style and nuance.

My point was along the lines of anonymous sources (AI is anonymous in that it may be the product, more or less, of humans, but it’s not human) are less worthy of trust and belief than ones we can identify as humans. I can now identify Matt Taibbi and Michael Shellenberger along with Tucker and Elon. I can’t “identify” the mind behind any of the AI “machines”. I have more trust in the humans than Max Headroom.

Yep. That's sort of what I was alluding to about my experiment. It lacked ... what's the word? ... panache. No style. No human touch. It had the same personality as any other robotic. But that was then. Now I understand the new and improved version is more "human" ... in fact too human. Forced emotion, is what I've read.

I can see, however, writers/authors/journalists using it as a jumpoff point ... for investigation or research. Perhaps a short topic for discussion tomorrow?

I think we are also seeing the first mass layoffs from new generative AI & AI helpers. Employees are no longer needed. Even coders are no longer needed … this is the start of major layoffs in EVERY sector. The 4th Industrial Revolution is being rolled out NOW… the robots are now smarter & cheaper than the workers … it’s gonna get real.. very soon 🙏

A very salient point. Sports Illustrated denied such allegations, but several online commenters identified at least two fake bylines late last year.

What Jim? People lie?

I like to refer to it as "sophistry." Or "prevarication."

But yeah ... lies.

Jim,

I believe you have nailed it:

The demise of main stream media was self inflicted.

They lost our trust.

Byfailing to adhere

to the high standards required of journalism: objectivity and balance.

They DID NOT give us the whole story.

Just their own version of it.

Each news organ self righteously believed and proclaimed that their own (highly biased) reporting was the source of all Truth.

People woke up and saw it wasn't.

Yes, and just as you say,

people "no longer know who or what

to believe, so they stopped believing everybody."

This disaster has fueled our terrible split.

We have no common sources of trusted info.

We run to our two camps for illusory security

but are none the wiser

because each side remains ignorant

of the valid concerns of the other.

We see ONLY the negative in each other.

The right sees the left as vermin.

The left sees the right as maggots.

This is the language of exterminators-to-be.

We are headed toward a bloody eruption of rage with no steadying uniting influences

to hold us back.

Deborah ... you just thoroughly and accurately finished my piece. Spot on, Deborah. Thanks.

Good story, Jim. I enjoy reading about this industry, obvs. Having spent nearly a couple of decades as a printing press operator printing magazines and newspapers, I saw the writing on the wall and switched to digital media. Remember 'they' were going to get rid of all paper? Paperless offices. Now it's plastic.

(Good luck getting your water from a tap fed by anything other than plastic).

Anywho...very interesting news story happening up here in Canada. "A Canadian family moved to Russia to escape ‘wokeness’ and LGBTQ+ people. It did not go well". Russia seized their bank accounts, and won't let them leave. Unbelievable story. Sad too. https://www.thepinknews.com/2024/02/21/canadian-family-moved-to-russia-to-escape-wokeness/✌️
