From Quoth the Maven: Thank You!
I've reached a significant milestone. But I ask your help to take QTM to the next level.
A Milestone
Since launching this Substack space 18 months ago I have published 52 written pieces and approximately 130,000 words. That’s the same number of words as in a 450-page novel.
A couple of months ago, I changed the site name from “Jim’s Gems” to “Quoth the Maven” and turned to this smartly-dressed, aristocratic black bird as a brand. Yes, I “borrowed” from Edgar Allan Poe. So what. No apologies – he’s been dead for 180 years and I didn’t kill him.
It started slow – I think I had 36 readers with that first article. Now I’m getting anywhere from 400-600 readers with each publishing. There are subscribers in the U.K., Belgium, Denmark, Canada and Australia.
A couple of pieces have gone semi-viral — the “Stanford List of No-Nos” was a hot topic on Twitter last December and ended up being read by more than 2,500 people. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution published “Redemption, Baseball and Unity” as an op-ed in Oct. 2021.
I’m grateful. And blessed. To you, if you’ve subscribed, or have received my work via email or other platforms, thank you! I write about whatever interests me — personal reflections, topical essays, humor and social commentary — and I see it interests you, too. Fantastic! I assure you this is a genuinely fulfilling and rewarding pursuit. Your support has been the best part of that reward.
You can help me grow
Now I’m looking to expand the scope of “Quoth the Maven” and would appreciate your help in spreading my words …

Special Requests: Finally, I’m taking requests. If you have an idea or topic you’d like to see me explore, please let me know. I am ceaselessly curious and love learning new things to write about.
I have added 10 new subscribers over the last week. I’d like to double that next week, and double again the following week, and so on. So I’m reaching out. You can help me reach these goals.
Again, thank you for your support. You are truly appreciated.
Warmest regards,
Jim
Nicely done Jim!
